Former Duke player, NBA player recent Duke graduate who was hired by Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer to be an Assistant Coach.

As a freshman at Duke in 1997-1998 as a sophomore in 1998-1999,

William Avery who was a guard played 74 games averaged 11.9 points, 2.8 rebounds , 3.8 assists per game where he was NCAA All-Region 1999 All-ACC Tourney before being drafted by Minnesota in first round of the 1999 NBA Draft as the 14th overall pick. For Minnesota he played three seasons. 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001 -2002 where he played in 142 games averaged 2.7 points , 0.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists.

William Avery graduated from Duke recently with his undergraduate degree in African American Studies while assisting Duke for the previous four seasons while completing his undergraduate degree in African American Studies.

William Avery hiring as Duke Assistant Coach comes following new NCAA rules went into effect July 1 that included the addition of two full-time on-court coaching positions in men's basketball.
