The Duke visit had a different feeling,"Everything felt right. It was a dream school for me since I was 8 years old. I wanted to go to Duke and actually play for Coach K. Coach Jon Scheyer kept it real with me from day one. Duke wins, and I can trust him."

We saw Montgomery in two very different contexts this summer. In the EYCL, he was a volume scorer with the ultimate green light. Everything went through him and he put up a whopping 27.9 points on 54/34/76 shooting along with 10.2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3.3 stocks (1.4 steals and 1.9 blocks) per game. With USA Basketball though, he bought into being a role playing four. He provided energy, offensive rebounding, cutting, defensive versatility, and playmaking within their full-court pressure, even though he was surprisingly reluctant to shoot at times.
Those two experiences provide a range of what he could become in the future, both right away at the next level, and then farther down the road as he continues to develop. At 6-foot-6 with a 6-foot-10 wingspan and naturally broader frame, he’s best described as a combo-forward who is transitioning from more of a stretch-four into a bigger wing. He’s an explosive vertical athlete off two feet who has a good sense of timing, both in transition and as a cutter. He’s not necessarily a dynamic creator with the ball in his hands, but he’s a consistent shooting threat who can pick-and-pop, attack close-outs, play out of the mid-post, and go to the offensive glass.
He has good instincts on both ends of the floor and a nose for the ball defensively. Even in FIBA competition, he showed an ability to get his hands on a lot of balls, rebound it well enough to match-up with opposing fours, and be switchable on the ball.
What’s exciting about Montgomery is that he shows a willingness and ability to do the “little things” that will help him get on the floor right away at the next level, but also has a clear upside. He’s very young for his grade and won’t turn 18 until July after his senior year. So, there’s a long runway for him to add the scoring and skill we’ve seen in the grassroots world, ultimately giving him the potential to be a versatile two-way threat.
